"One Armed Man" by Russell Javors

Unreleased recording, by an unsigned artist (uploaded with artists permission)

"One Armed Man" by Russell Javors

I think the lyrics to this are pretty weird, but the groove the musicians are in is extraordinary. This song is at least 30 years old, but still is cool as hell to me.

Ray-Man - 1987

My son Ray-Man 22 years ago as I was teaching him how to vocalize and speak. Watch his hand ... It really breaks me up.

"The Best Of Me" by Russell Javors

The Best Of Me by Russell Javors

Unreleased song, from an unsigned artist. All rights reserved.

Up until now I have been sharing (with permission) songs of Russell's that were written as far back as 35 years ago. But this song was written much more recently, and was in tribute to Russell's friend Doug Stegmeyer, who we lost some years ago. It's a moving ballad sung as if from Doug's point of view, and I think it is one of Russell's best compositions ever.

"A Little Black & Blue"

A Little Black & Blue by Jim Cim

After listening to Rihanna speak about her relationship with Chris Brown I was reminded that I wrote a song about women who accept being beaten by some guy, and go back to him again, and again. Especially hard to understand when that woman has money, and power. Here's my somewhat theatrical examination of this phenomena, "A Little Black & Blue".

A LITTLE BLACK & BLUE

LOOK IN MY EYES, TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE
THAT LOOK OF DANGER IS WHAT DRAWS YOU TO ME
AH, YOU WOMEN ARE FUNNY
YOU WANT WHAT'S BAD FOR YOU

YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL YOU DON'T GET WHAT YOU SEEK
IF YOU'VE GOT ANY SENSE YOU'LL STAY AWAY FROM ME
CAUSE I PLAY REAL ROUGH BABY
YOU'LL BEG BEFORE WE'RE THROUGH
THE OTHERS TOLD YOU BABY
HOW YOU WOULD PAY THE DUES
A LITTLE BLACK & BLUE

TAKE OFF YOUR COAT BABY -  PUT UP YOUR HAIR
TRY ON THIS RUBBER SUIT AND GET UP ON THAT CHAIR
I WARNED YOU BABY
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO YOU
BUT YOU REFUSED TO LISTEN
AND NOW IT'S COMIN' TRUE
A LITTLE BLACK AND BLUE

(Sweet thing)
HE'S THE CUTEST BOY I'VE EVER SEEN
THAT DEMON THING'S AN ACT
HE'S REALLY SWEET
I'M SURE IN TIME
I'LL HELP HIM GROW

LOOK IN MY EYES BABY TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE
THAT LOOK OF DANGER IS WHAT DREW YOU TO ME
AH, YOU WOMEN ARE FUNNY
YOU WANT WHAT'S BAD FOR YOU
I'M GONNA SHOW YOU BABY
HOW YOU CAN PAY YOUR DUES
A LITTLE BLACK & BLUE

(Sweet thing)    HE'S THE CUTEST BOY I'VE EVER SEEN
THAT DEMON THING'S AN ACT
HE'S REALLY SWEET
I'M SURE IN TIME
I'LL HELP HIM GROW

COME ON BABY STOP YOUR STALIN'
GET UP ON THAT CHAIR AND START THAT BALLIN'
WIPE YOUR EYES
DRY THAT RAIN
TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND TRY IT AGAIN
SAID YOU NEED A REAL BAD MAN
GIVE YOU WHAT THE OTHERS CAN'T
WELL BABY HERE'S THE LATEST NEWS

Lao-Tzu

Lao-tzu said:

Human beings are tranquil by birth this is the celestial nature. Sensing things, they act ... this is natural desire. When things come to them, they respond ... this is the action of knowledge. When knowledge and things interact, likes and dislikes arise. When likes and dislikes are formed, knowledge goes to externals and cannot be returned to the self so the celestial design disappears.

Therefore sages do not replace the celestial by the human. Outwardly they evolve along with things, yet inwardly they do not lose their true state. So those who realize the Way return to clear tranquility. Those who find out about things end up without contrivance. They nurture the intelligence by calmness, unify the spirit by abstraction, and take to the gate of nothingness.

Those who follow heaven travel with the Way; those who follow humans mix with the vulgar. Therefore sages do not let business disturb the world and do not let desires confuse feelings. They do what is appropriate without scheming they are trusted without speaking. They succeed without thinking about it, achieve without contriving to do so.
Therefore when they are above, the people do not take it gravely and when they are in front, others do not attack them. The whole world resorts to them, the treacherous fear them. Because they do not contend with anyone, no one dares to contend with them.

Does Your Attitude Impact Your Photography?

2009 OCTOBER 21
tags: attitude

I’ve been doing a great deal of self-reflection lately. I’ve tried to analyze every aspect of my photography. While gear, technique and craft are all things I’m trying to improve, I also realize that my attitude is important.

Here are some steps I am taking to improve my attitude.

a. I am trying not to let my opinion of my circumstances guide my actions. If it’s raining outside, I can either decide the weather is crap or I can decide the weather offers great storm cloud photography options.

b. I am trying to look at my past mistakes to see how I can improve and learn from them rather than lamenting them.

c. I am trying to focus on what’s really important rather than what’s supposed to be urgent.

d. I am trying to challenge my own assumptions about my work and asking if there’s anything I should revisit or revise based on new information, tools or skills.

e. I am trying to ignore any and all echo chambers in the field of photography.

f. I am trying to open my mind and my heart to new ideas.

g. I am trying not to let my emotions get the better of me.

I make no claim at all that I am successful in this endeavor – I only claim that I am trying. Perhaps this sort of self-reflection will help you. I firmly believe that by considering all these things, I’m finding ways to improve my work and to remain excited about all things photographic.

Windows 7

Microsoft releases Windows 7 tomorrow, and the word from the tech geeks in the know is that it is the most stable system Microsoft has ever had, and for the first time comparable to the Mac operating system for performance, and reliability.

However, the system is difficult to install on existing computers, and people will likely have to have it installed by a service center ... or just buy another computer with the system already installed. The good news is that the system is not the nightmare Vista turned out to be, and it makes the argument on which platform to buy less critical.
